Catalogs

(Type Heinemann Artwork or Type Commission Return)

The 289 surviving catalogs (1880, 1889, 1890, from 1896 every year, sometimes several catalogs, up to the Spitzweg exhibition in 1935) are structured differently. Whereas a few of the catalogs contain only sales lists with the name of the artist and the title of the artwork, other catalogs contain more detailed information on the artists or images of the artworks. In some cases the printed information is supplemented with handwritten annotations, for instance, a desired sales price.

The catalogs can be divided into two groups:

1. Catalogs of sales and stock:
These contain essentially only artworks which were the property of the gallery. A few of the catalogs were produced for thematic exhibitions. Some of them contain images.

2. Catalogs of so-called group exhibitions:
The gallery organized an entire series of individual and group exhibitions (labeled "group exhibition" even for individual artists). The artworks did not belong to the gallery, or if so, only to a limited extent. The exhibited works were usually goods on consignment or were privately owned and were not for sale.

All of the catalogs are retrievable from the database. The printed sales lists were entered with a summary data record; the group exhibitions were additionally linked with data records on every artist. The images in the catalogs were linked with the artwork data record, if the artwork could be clearly identified and correlated.

The artworks in the catalogs are artworks traded by the gallery (H-Nr.) as well as goods taken on consignment (C-Nr.).
