Stock ledgers of artworks taken on consignment
Stock ledgers 5 to 8 of artworks taken on consignment
(short key: LB05 to LB08, Type Commission Return)
Goods on consignment are listed in stock ledgers 5 to 8, that is, artworks that the Galerie Heinemann took on consignment from the owners, often the artists themselves, and attempted to sell for them. In the majority of cases the goods on consignment were returned after a short time, if no buyers were found. However, occasionally the artworks were also stored for 20 to 30 years at the gallery before being returned. As a rule the withdrawal lists the name of the owner and is noted with 'retour'.
The artworks on consignment have a consecutive number (C-Nr.) between 1903 and 1930. When the artwork was finally sold, the Heinemann number (H-Nr.) was noted at the end of the line.
The ledgers contain the following information
“In page” with information on the artworks taken on consignment: date, consignment and catalog number, name of the artist, title, dimensions, agreed purchase price, price of frame, comments (i.e., on prices including frame or "not for sale").
“Out page” with information on owner and removal: owner of the artwork, address of the owner, desired sales price, removal date as well as the column "out", in which it is noted whether the artwork was purchased by the Galley or sent back to the owner.
